So I promised I'd let you all know how it went having my awful morning class lead discussion. And it's not going any better - in fact, it may even be worse. I had two reasons for thinking this little exercise might improve participation. First, I thought that they might be more embarrased to give their friends nothing but dead airtime than me. Not so, it seems. Secondly, I thought that the reluctant participants might talk more after they'd led discussion and felt the awkward pain of sitting there with a 15 or so blank faces staring back at them. And that hasn't happened either.
So at this point, I'm just not worrying about them anymore. It's just going to be painful for the next month, and then we're done.
